The ITA Tunnelling
Awards 2016: Second annual international
competition to celebrate achievements in tunnelling and underground
construction invites nominations
Two
days Conference in Singapore on November 10th and 11th including the Awards
Conference and Banquet
After
a successful launch in 2015 (110 nominations, 11 awards for projects and
personalities), the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association
is launching the second program for the ITA Tunnelling Awards. This event will
take place in Singapore on the 10th and 11th of November 2016. ITA is now
inviting nominations to this prestigious competition.
Profiling
particularly outstanding achievements in underground infrastructure across the
world through this competition, ITA intends to identify and support a wide and
diverse range of tunnelling projects, from huge-scale and large-budget
infrastructure projects to more specific ground-breaking technical innovations.
Entries
are under nine categories, namely:
• Major Tunnelling Project of the Year
- over €500m
• Tunnelling Project of the Year -
between €50m and €500m
• Outstanding Tunnelling Project of the
Year - up to €50m
• Renovation/Upgrading project of the
Year
• Technical Innovation of the Year
• Environmental Initiative of the Year
• Safety Initiative of the Year
• Innovative Use of Underground Space
• Young Tunneller of the Year
Entries
can be submitted until 30 May 2016. The submission requirements and selection
process are stated in the ITA Tunnelling Awards website
(https://awards.ita-aites.org/). The finalists will be announced by mid-July
2016.
What’s
new in 2016? An expanded format for the Awards Event:
For
the 2016 edition of the ITA Tunnelling Awards event which is supported by the
Tunnelling and Underground Construction Society, Singapore, and to be held in
Singapore, there will be two important days:
• On November 10th, a one-day Technical
Conference with 8 high-profile keynote lectures.
• On November 11th, the one-day Awards
Conference and Banquet Dinner, during which the awards will be presented.
Technical
Conference on November 10th:
At
present there are a number of tunnelling projects underway in the island state
of Singapore for mass transit lines and utility services peaking with 50 TBMs
engaged. Studies and detailed designs
are also in progress for further transit lines, deep sewers as well as tunnels
to support the expansion of Changi Airport. The one-day Conference will provide
an opportunity to share knowledge and experiences gained locally by four
keynote lectures together with another four keynote lectures from overseas.
An
Award trophy embodying a brilliant and famous engineer:
Isambard
Kingdom Brunel (9 April 1806 – 15 Sep-tember 1859) was a British Mechanical and
Civil Engineer considered “one of the most inge¬nious and prolific figures in
engineering history”. With his French father (Marc Brunel), they designed and
built the Thames Tunnel in London England, which was the first tunnel to be
excavated with a Tunnelling Shield starting in 1825.
ITA
Tunnelling Awards Conference and Banquet Dinner on November 11th:
On
this day, finalists will present their achievements, and describe the unique
and innovative features that convinced the judges to select their projects. A
broad array of the most impressive tunnelling works, as well as innovations and
excellence in engineering, safety, environmental initiatives and use of
underground space, from around the world will be presented. This conference
will be a unique opportunity to discover, learn and share the outstanding
projects and the recent state-of-the art practices. The event will also be a day for networking,
and an opportunity for global and local companies to present their services and
technologies as part of our dedicated sponsoring program. A banquet dinner will
close the event during which the winners will be announced and the awards
presented.
